Protein is not sacrificed - Wx Phos-focused foods are suitable for purely carnivorous animals

Cats with kidney problems may benefit from a diet that is lower in phosphorus, but we believe it is necessary to include adequate levels of protein. By definition, cats are specialized carnivores, which means their bodies need meat. Meat contains high quality protein which helps to maintain muscle mass, which is important for cats with kidney problems.
Maintaining low phosphorus levels and adequate protein is often a challenge, as increases in protein levels are often associated with increases in phosphorus levels. As a result, many traditional "low phosphorus" diets often sacrifice protein content to achieve target phosphorus levels. Because such formulas replace muscle-building protein with other sources of calories such as carbohydrates, they may not be entirely suitable for specialized carnivores.
